Webster Village Days

EZ-Up tent
Professional product photographer

A co-worker gave me a flyer yesterday announcing that Webster Village Days is looking for artists for their August event. I emailed the co-ordinators and they emailed me an application. The entry fee is $95 for a 10' x 10' booth which makes me a little nervous, but not totally.

It's time to go big or go home. This has fallen into my lap to help me fulfill my 2006 goal of doing craft shows.

But.

I'll need a tent. (Dad, you sold yours long ago, right?)

Just the night before I was reading in my new book, Crafting as a Business by Wendy Rosen, how important it is to have a professional photographer who is familiar with photographing product, take your slides, that are to be submitted to juried shows. The quality of your slides can make or break your chances of being accepted. I briefly Googled photographers in my area and they all seem to be geared towards weddings and portraits. But I'll find one. Preferably a one-person entrepreneurial type. Maybe we can even barter services a bit.

The first step is finding a photographer. I suppose it makes sense to see if I'm accepted into the show before investing in a tent. But I need to start looking now (will start with eBay) because sooner or later, I'll need a tent anyway. I will be doing outdoor shows.

I know I want to do this. I just have to see some numbers for these investments. I'm posting this here because you guys are always full of good advice. Bring it.



I'm cutting green shapes now - had enough purple for a while!

How about asking local people who've done those shows and have used photographers and purchased (or rented) tents, etc.?

As a matter of fact, as soon as I posted this entry, I emailed MJ, the glass painter I work for during her shows, for advice. I call her my mentor - I know she'll have good advice for me.

Hiring a commercial photographer can be very expensive. Two places to try to find a bargain: Community Darkroom (on Monroe Avenue) or RIT (Photography program). Or you can borrow my camera and try taking them yourself on the high res setting.

For a tent, you're looking for a canopy, right? I have a camping tent but that's not what you're looking for, right?

I thought about Community Darkroom (but didn't remember the name - it's where you took classes, right?) - but good tip about RIT. I thought about asking you or Dad, since we actually have two photographers in the family but that Crafts Business book scared me by saying "Never use family or friends." But she doesn't know MY family!!

And yes, it's really a canopy with sides.

Make sure you see samples of the photographer's work. Preferably featuring something similar to your items. When I was in college I was desperate for a time saver (though it wasn't like I had money to spare either) so I hired a photographer to take photos of my Naturally Fruit apple juice bottles. They turned out terrible. I could have done better myself, and I was just a student!

I have several amateur photographers on staff at work. I can send out an email to them if you want! Most are all very young, but there a couple of 30 somethings as well. Mostly RIT students. Let me know!
