Strawberries

.

Photo swiped from World Community Cookbook.

I sliced up two quarts of strawberries for a birthday treat at work today, to be served with angel food cake and whipped cream. The birthday girl received the requisite Stefani Brownies last week but for various reasons we were unable to celebrate with our usual sweets in the afternoon. It's a departmental thing we like to do.

When I was slicing the strawberries, I made Simon his only little container because I was afraid he'd dig into these and go hog wild. We do love our strawberries.

That was our Father's Day dessert, lo fat whipped cream and I think the angel food cake was too.

I went to a retirement luncheon yesterday, and the dessert was the lightest shortcake I've ever had, served ON strawberry sauce, with a cream topping (not whipped cream, something that looked like cheesecake but was not), with a partially sliced whole strawberry on top. It was very nice and light.

My lunch was an oval boat dish of chicken chunks and artichoke hearts in red sauce and salad. Really good. That place is always good, though -- it's a little restaurant staffed by volunteers serving the Sacramento Children's Home.

They used to have the loveliest gift shop, but for some reason they had to close it. And then I saw a puppy outside, and I want a dog like this - maltese/yorkie mix! It was adorable. And doesn't bark!

I don't always go to retirement things, but the man retiring is a very exceptional guy, 43 years of service to the Mother Ship!

Angel food cake is always fat-free, I think, Bonnie, and perfect for a fruit accompaniment. I sweetened the strawberries with Splenda because one of the guys is diabetic. They tasted fine but they sure don't juice up like with sugar.

That lunch & dessert sound delish!

I'm glad that man made it to retirement. We just laid off 2 more employees yesterday, both sales people. One hasn't been with us very long but the other has been here forever and is close to retirement. That's the 2nd person "forced" to retire a little earlier than they planned.

Here I thought the scary times were winding down.

Were you ever inspired by your love of berries to create some of your artwork? Something about those cute little seeds against the red color with the green top. . .Mother Nature is gorgeous!
