Saturday, January 3, 2004 I don't know what's gotten into me but I've been very proactive lately in running errands. I generally try to do these things on the way home from work, which is the reason I'm thinking of them in a negative light. I just want to go home to my nest. I even ventured to the mall at lunchtime yesterday! I returned a sweater that Wilma gave me for Christmas. I thought I was going to like it a lot but when I put it on, it just wasn't a Stefani-Friendly style. So I had my first Coldwater Creek adventure. It's one of the new stores in the new wing of the mall.
I exchanged it for this vest. This is so me! I had tried on a couple of things and decided today just wasn't the day. I had my car keys in my hand, heading for the door when this caught my eye. It has kind of tapestry feel to it. It was marked down $20 and I still had to pay $14 above when the sweater costs. I still feel like I got a deal because it didn't cost many dollars out of my pocket and I love it so much. I'm very happy and can't wait to wear it.
Speaking of clothes and the larger woman, go read what Weetabix wrote about bad fashion. She is extremely funny as always and completely right on. Even though she posts very few pictures of herself, you believe her when she says she makes large fashion work. I've even forgiven her for lumping me in with the crowd that is apparently allowed to wear "retirement wear", having been born prior to 1960. I've probably said this before but if you aren't reading Weetabix, you should be. And always read her comments - they are almost as funny as her entry.
Stefani: I cannot read this Burpee seed catalog before going to sleep. Steve: Why not? Stefani: It makes my heart race! Look at these colors! Look at these blossoms! Steve: (turns over to continue reading Sports Illustrated)
Psychedelic Spring I started some plants from seed 2 years ago. I was moderately successful. I placed the flats in our dining room right next to two large windows and near sliding glass doors. Our house gets plenty of light, such as it is, in late winter/early spring. But the seedlings still ended up being kind of leggy. I turned them frequently. So I've been thinking of starting them under lights. You know me, everything is a project. I'm going to do more reading on this but I bring this up to solicit advice from my reader friends. Also, where do you buy seeds, preferably an online source? I just ordered the Harris Seeds catalog, which I thought I'd already done but since a catalog has not arrived, I must not have. I like them because they are a local company. And they have a store near me. Mental note to self: Do not, under any circumstances, let your eyeballs overload your ass! Just because a seed packet contains 125 seeds, it doesn't mean you must plant all 125 this year!
After I wrote the above, I met Pam for breakfast at the new "our place", Steve's Place. We used to meet at The Duchess but their staff is so damn unfriendly and the food is just average. Steve's Place no longer has my very favoritest thick country toast so I switched to the multi-grain, which I liked. They were out of that today so I had the sourdough. Love it! Nice and chewy. That may be my new "standard" there. We both had ham & Swiss cheese omelet wraps, the special of the day. When they arrived I told Pam I wish I'd brought my camera to take a picture for the journal! She's a regular here, she completely understood. After breakfast I stopped at Home Depot to check out gro-lights. They didn't have much yet so I looked at plain florescent lights, just getting a feel for prices. Then I saw the plant/aquarium replacement tubes. Ahhh, that's the ticket. I did a little research after writing the first part of this entry and read that the lights should be kept about 6" above the plants. That's when it dawned on me that it doesn't matter how diligent I am about turning the seedlings, we just don't get enough light here in cloudy Rochester in March and April. Then the deal clincher was that the author suggested putting the lights on a timer. Bingo! We have a spare timer that I used on the Christmas tree this year. So I'm this close to deciding to start the seeds under lights this year. Again, I'd love any advice you care to offer. (Dad, this means you! - though I know you prefer email to the comments.) Let's see, I dropped Simon off to get his hair cut - actually he drove, of course. We really need to get some more driving time in. We took a break during his wisdom teeth recovery. Then he wanted to go to the mall so he could run in and use his FYE gift certificates. (Nope, he didn't even go to the Dreaded Abercrombie & Fitch, even though he has a wallet full of Christmas cash and couple of gift cards to use there. Shocking, isn't it?) I was feeling generous so even though I'd declared this weekend a Stefani Weekend, I consented to go. He didn't want to drive though, saying there would be too much traffic. Holy shit, was he right. We were there around 4:00 and the exits looked like part of the parking lot. We sat in the car and talked for quite a while - interesting stuff - good mother/son bonding time. And quite a relief after his rudeness of the last few days. I could tell he was feeling better because his snotty teenage attitude resumed. I told him Friday that just because he didn't need me to take care of him anymore didn't mean he could be rude to me. Things have been good since. He had 3 friends over to spend the night last night - their last hurrah before returning to school Monday. Otherwise, I've continued to get so much done this weekend, mainly paperwork wise, but I've made a few cards too. Steve and I watched a couple more episodes of The Sopranos. We are really diggin' that show. We were only through 1 tape (3 shows) when Steve said we better order the 2nd season.
