Friday, January 9, 2004 It was -5 degrees today. Wind chill below that. That's just wrong.
The creative juices have been flowing like crazy! I made about 7 new Valentine's Day cards last night. I'm going to make more this weekend so I'll show them to you all at once. My plan is to get these up at Village Gifts Sunday afternoon. I need to get what's left of the holiday cards out of there and fill the wall with red and pink!
Tonight I made a shitload of heart pins! I'll glue the pin backs on tomorrow. I went to Michaels to buy some wooden red hearts like I did last year to make pins.
The red heart from last year is above right - just slapped a pin back on it and called it a pin. I wear it often, it's one of my favorites. The bottom one I covered with patterned gold leaf - I wear that one a lot too. The upper left one was a plain wood heart that I decoupaged with mulberry paper. I don't wear it quite so often - it's a little big but I love the texturey look of it. I dang near tinkled my pants when I found a bag of wood hearts - 3 different sizes of 4 different colors - 350 pieces in all - for $5.00! I just had the best time gluing different configurations together. I'm going to put them in a basket on the counter at Village Gifts where all the jewelry is. I'll have to sell them on consignment, meaning the store gets their cut but that's okay. I really liked them plain but then I got the bright idea to put the little dots on them with Tulip Paper Paint. I don't even want to tell you how old this stuff is I've had. I don't think they even make it anymore but I could probably find something comparable. It's sort of dimensional, holding it's shape. I still left some pins plain but I think the dots really funk them up a bit. They are about 1-3/4" across and I'll sell them for $2 each. I hope they sell like hotcakes because I want to make more! Hearts, colors and dimension. Be still my crafty little heart.
I'm really liking the audiobook I'm listening to, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Gretchen read it and didn't care for it so much. I'm sure I like it because it would fall under what Gretchen calls the Oprah Genre, aka Poor Pitiful Me. And pitiful it is. I literally cried all the way to work this morning. I wasn't sobbing but I could have if I wasn't driving. I was thankful it was pitch black out so other drivers couldn't see my scrunchy-faced crying jag. Lord have mercy. Then I arrived at work and had to enter the wind chill weather of -11 degrees! I'm surprised I didn't enter the building with icicles stuck to my face. This thing better have a happy ending. (Don't tell me, please!) Reading: Live Simply in the City, by Jonathan Allan & Lynne Cantwell, with forward by Vicki Robin. Jonathan has been a moderator and frequent poster on the Simple Living forums, which I've mentioned frequently as a wonderful source of information and inspiration. It's pretty cool to type the name of someone you "know" in the Amazon search box! (The same was true for fellow journalist Fred Anderson's From Chunk to Hunk book.)
