Saturday, April 10, 2004 I told Nikki today she was a gosh darn genius for asking me if I wanted to split our 7 hour shifts at Village Gifts. I love being there, but it sure is nice not to have an entire Saturday chewed up by that. Today I worked 10:00 - 1:30 and she worked 1:30 - 5:00. (Mom, I forgot you said you were going to stop by the store - did you? This split thing was sort of a new development, I should have told you when I was working.) I took a few pictures this morning. Wanna see?
This is a portion of my rack, showing some Easter cards. This past week I added that ribbon down the side so I can display Robin's necklaces better. It looks better in person than it does here. She's working on a new one - a dragonfly, of which she's sending me a sample any day now. Those are Marcy's cards in the middle there. And those bunnies are Blue Turtle Studio cards, which are blank inside so I'll put them under All Occasion after Easter. The Easter cards I made are off to the right, out of the shot.
This baby section used to be upstairs but the vendor lives out of town and has a job there now, so she can no longer come back to Fairport to work her 10 hours/month. So now she's selling it on consignment, where there is not the working-in-the-store obligation. Her products looks so bright and cheery here - very fresh. It's mostly onesies with nice appliqués on the front that she makes - but other stuff too.
These signs are new. The vendor for these is the teenage daughter of the owners. I think these will sell well this summer.
Gretchen - printed face. I couldn't remember the other day. There are a few new Raggedy Ann dolls and even some Raggedy Ann pins. No Andys though!
There are quite a few new chickens (I suppose that's really a rooster, isn't it?) in all different colors. I really like these guys for some reason - I think it's the dots that does it for me.
This is a new vendor - Fun with Candy. I was calling these sundaes but I guess they really are sodas. These are so fun!
I assume this person makes these her/himself. I peaked at one today and it appeared to be a Styrofoam ball with each piece of candy and curly ribbon strand glued to it. They are an alternative for flower arrangements. There is a wide variety, for all different occasions. They also market them as corporate gifts and do custom work too. A lot of work goes into these, if they are all handmade. I can't wait to meet him/her.
This is a new display that was recently added in a space where before there was none. There's a little something from each vendor here - I have a couple of cards there in the middle and some car chimes on top. It looks nice! Oh - and those are the new white lights that I am so excited about. Those used to be recessed lights, so these are much better - really add a touch of warmth to the store. I had a pretty reasonable morning - the busiest time I've had there in a while. Last weekend was Fairport's Spring Open House so all the stores had sales and promotions. We had a drawing for items that were donated by each vendor. There were about 4 people that had not picked up their door prize yet and one came in today. It was a teenage girl - and she picked my car chimes! The reason I feel so happy about this is because the last time we did this, I donated a card and it was one of several things left over at the end. I realized I felt a little embarrassed about it, but know it's not to be taken personally. Most of the other things donated were of a higher value - and who would pick a card as a prize? So I felt redeemed when this girl picked the hummingbird car chimes (tiny windchimes you hang from your rear view mirror).
Steve and I both are taking Monday off. Since the kids are off school all next week for Spring Break, we thought it would be a good time to paint Lizz's room. She had chosen red when she and I last talked about it last summer when I was painting my studio. I believe that's still the color of choice. My only stipulation was the ceiling and woodwork must remain white. But it's almost 5:00 Saturday and nothing has been moved out of her room so I'm not sure what the schedule is since I suspect she'll be doing Easter events with her mom tomorrow. I thought they were going to move stuff out of her room this morning while I worked, then tonight we'd strip wallpaper, fill holes and paint the ceiling. Not everyone operates on my timetable and I knew this going in so I'm cool with whatever happens. I think Steve and I might watch some more Sopranos tonight. We're on Season 3, I think.
I got up earlyish this morning and took Reggi for a walk along the canal. It's a paved path and there are small boulders every so often. This dog had to stop and smell every freakin' boulder on the first leg of our walk! I told her she was acting like she'd never been let outside before. On the way back, she didn't stop so much, thank goodness. While it wasn't much of an aerobic workout, it was lovely being outside in the fresh air. It was about 38 degrees but the sun made it feel warmer. I just wore a turtleneck and sweatshirt - no gloves, even.
Dinner: We're going to have pizza and wings tonight. I planned that back when I thought I'd be working all day at Village Gifts. Clever snip that I am, I mentioned it to Steve, saying we could eat leftovers or frozen pizza - knowing that once I'd planted the seed, he would want the pizza and wings. Score! Reading: Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew aka gardening in neat little anal retentive squares. This is so Stefani.
Listening to in the car: Music,
which means a lot of button punching for me.
