Quilts

I've made quilts. Gretchen has made quilts. Both of our grandmothers were quilters. (We think it skips generations, and will likely continue to, unless our boys take up quilting. That does not look promising at this point.)

This is the first quilt I ever made. It's a sampler quilt I learned in an adult education class, in the early 80s. It's hand pieced and hand quilted, my preferred method. (Machine sewing is very stressful for me, for some reason.) (Please excuse the extraneous green showing underneath.) This sampler quilt is "throw" size. I remember that I actually made all the blocks learned in the class, because it was so much fun, but only kept these 12, my favorites.

This is the second quilt I made, still in my brown period, I see. This is a crib quilt I made for Simon's arrival. It won a 2nd place red ribbon in a local quilt show.

These stockings are for Zeke (cat), Stefani, Simon, Lee, Nils (cat) - December 1988. All the stockings are quilted except Simon's, something he has never let me forget. (Hey, I was in a hurry, wanted it done by Christmas!)

Gretchen and I made this Giant Dahlia quilt for Mom.

I also made the Cathedral Window wall hanging over her bed. She says I made the dark square quilted pillow too, but I have zero recollection of that! I do remember making the pillow next to it, with the cross-stitched birdhouse on it. I think that was a kit that Mom bought, I finished stitching for her and she made into a pillow. (I hate the finishing part and Mom is excellent at it.)

This is my pride and joy. This is a medallion quilt I made in 1985. This style is called a medallion quilt because the design starts in the center and spreads out symmetrically. I'm all about symmetry, you know. It's faded quite a bit, I'm sure. I used it on my bed exclusively for 16 years I think. (Told you I loved it.) It's showing some wear. I finally put it in storage when the kitten and puppy showed up in 2001.
